An internship is a short-term work placement that usually lasts from a few weeks to a few months, and can be paid or unpaid. Interns are usually students or recent graduates who want to gain some practical experience and exposure to a certain field or organization. Internships are a great way for a student to see a company, its ethics, its culture, and more especially to learn about the job. This will help you in your career decisions.A good internship should be based on education. If there is no education then it isn't an internship, it is a part time job.A good internship should give you feedback during your time there whether that be positive, or room for improvement.A good company should be looking at a student during the internship and deciding if they are a fit for the company and if they are in the correct role at the company. If they are a fit for the company but not in the correct role, then what can the company do to get them correctly situated to offer up a great career?

I think that the definition of an internship is quite comprehensive and informative information. The internship period is a good time for a student who is a senior student or recent graduate to gain more practical knowledge from the professional environment. For example, in my company NEC Vietnam, we always plan to have at least two internship periods in a year for the IT students. During 3 months, students had many opportunities to study many courses that were designed to help them enhance their soft skills such as mastering your mind or business communication, etc. Besides, they also had a chance to be exposed and join the real project of NEC Vietnam.

I've sponsored and supported thousands of international talent participating in internships and trainings in the U.S. on the J visa. These opportunities offer a myriad of advantages that extend beyond boundaries of a home country and offer opportunities of personal and professional growth. When talent immerses themselves in a foreign work environment, their gaining not only a deeper understanding of intercultural competency, but also global awareness and diverse cultures. It is amazing to see these individuals gain new perspectives and innovative practices. These exchanges provide an amazing opportunity to interconnect, enrich and develop globally competitive futures for young professionals.

Our experience shows that jobs offering apprenticeships /roles with the opportunity to gain qualifications and progression attract higher calibre, more committed job seekers, so this is a great way to attract the best new talent. The double-whammy is that stats show that hiring apprentices is a great way to reduce staff attrition. Businesses that are paying the levy: use it or lose it! SME Businesses that are not paying the levy: the government funds 95% of the cost!

Depending on the industry and indeed the job, an apprenticeship can be a great opportunity for someone to learn while they earn. For example, TMC offers some apprenticeships to select individuals who have demonstrated a sincere interest in a career but do not yet have the education to step into that position. The apprenticeship then allows the person to work while learning, sometimes part-time college and sometimes on the job experiential learning.

4 What are the drawbacks of internships and apprenticeships?

Internships and apprenticeships can also pose some challenges and risks to both employers and graduates. For example, they may be subject to different laws and regulations, depending on the country, state, or sector. Employers and graduates need to be aware of the legal framework and obligations associated with their respective programs. Additionally, both employers and graduates face costs and resource-intensive investments for the programs. Employers may need to invest in recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of interns and apprentices. On the other hand, graduates may need to cover their living expenses, transportation, and education fees. Furthermore, the quality and consistency of internships and apprenticeships can vary widely. Employers must ensure that the programs are aligned with their strategic goals while graduates must secure suitable programs with meaningful learning outcomes.

5 How to design and implement effective internships and apprenticeships?

In order to maximize the benefits and minimize the drawbacks of internships and apprenticeships, employers and graduates need to design and implement them with certain best practices in mind. This includes defining clear objectives and expectations, providing adequate training and support, and evaluating and improving the programs. All parties must have a clear understanding of the purpose, scope, duration, roles, responsibilities, and expectations. They must also ensure that the programs are structured, organized, supervised, and provide sufficient training and support. Regular communication and feedback mechanisms should be established as well as opportunities for mentoring, coaching, and peer learning. Employers and graduates should also monitor progress, assess performance, collect data and feedback from participants and stakeholders, identify strengths and weaknesses of the programs, and make adjustments or improvements as needed. By following these tips, employers and graduates can create successful internships or apprenticeships that are mutually beneficial.

To design and implement effective internships and apprenticeships. From my working experience at NEC Vietnam, I have organized and hired many potentials after 3 months of internship. Employers must have a strategy plan to know what is the purpose of internships and how to do that effectively. -At first, the Human resources department has to collaborate with stakeholders to define the detailed program such as Who is responsible for the training classes, and how to evaluate the interns after the internship period, etc. Besides that, HR also needs a plan for employer branding, to attract interested students. -Secondly, the company needs to ensure that all information is delivered to students clearly and informatively.

At some point, employers and graduates should also discuss the expections towards the end of the internship or apprenticeship. For example, some company may only provide work certificate, instead a reference letter, to the graduate.
