This week, musicians, critics and fans around the world are reacting to the announcement of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for 2024. As it does every year, this year’s list of inductees has caused a stir as much for who it doesn’t include as for who it does.

Now that we know who’s getting inducted, though, we can cast our eyes towards the ceremony itself. When and where is it being held? And what can we expect to see?

Most buzz will revolve around who’ll be performing, but there are also the artists’ speeches to look forward to. Who can forget Mike Love’s outrageous outburst when The Beach Boys were inducted in 1988, for example? Or Paul McCartney’s emotional induction of John Lennon in 1994?

With so much to look forward to, your mind is likely abuzz with questions about this year’s induction that need answering. Well, Far Out has got you covered right here. We’ve gathered together everything you need to know about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Who is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year?

The headline inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for 2024 are the godfather of heavy metal, Ozzy Osbourne, decade-spanning pop icon Cher, pioneering guitarist Peter Frampton, queen of hip-hop soul Mary J. Blige, celebration specialists Kool and the Gang, and innovative nineties rap group A Tribe Called Quest.

Osbourne expressed his delight at being inducted as a solo artist 44 years after his first album came. “Not bad for a guy who was fired from his last band,” he joked.

Jazz fusion jammers, the Dave Matthews Band, and arena rockers, such as Foreigner, complete the set of inductees in the Performers category.

Then there are those being inducted with the Musical Excellence Award, for those “whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music”, according to the Hall of Fame itself. Ironically this group includes one of the greatest live bands of all time, Detroit’s punk progenitors MC5.

Others receiving this special award are soul-singing pioneer Dionne Warwick, Temptations producer and co-creator of the Motown sound Norman Whitfield, and prolific easy-listening singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett.

Three more musicians are being inducted with the Musical Influence Award: founder of the British blues movement Alexis Korner, his fellow Brit and blues guitarist John Mayall, and ‘Hound Dog’ singer Big Mama Thornton.

Finally, the Ahmet Ertegun Award inductee for a non-performer in the music industry is Suzanne de Passe, who was a pioneer of music television with Motown Productions. She completes the set of Motown soul music protagonists in this year’s list, meaning soul is likely to be a key theme of the 2024 ceremony.

Who was eligible for the Hall of Fame this year but missed out?

Probably the biggest omissions from the list of inductees were Britpop kings Oasis, who have now been eligible for five years, and Sinéad O’Connor, less than a year after her untimely death.

Oasis’ omission may well have had something to do with the band’s singer Liam Gallagher repeatedly stating he doesn’t want to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After recently telling the Hall of Fame to “f*ck off”, he explained, “I don’t want to be part of anything that mentally disturbed.”

Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz were two other big names with a lot of campaign buzz around their inclusion this year. But it’s unlikely too many rock and roll fans will be shedding a tear over their omission.

Where and when will the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony take place?

The 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 19th.

An announcement on the Hall of Fame’s official website yesterday that specified the ceremony would run from 8.00pm to 11.00pm Eastern Standard (New York) time has since been deleted. But based on the timing of last year’s ceremony, we can assume this announcement was probably accurate.

The ceremony will happen at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio, where inductions and musical performances will be filmed live. This venue is an arena in the same city as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum itself, which is why it was chosen.

Cleveland’s association with the Hall of Fame goes back to its founding in 1986. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHOF) Foundation led by Ahmet Ertegun chose the city as the museum’s home after it topped a public poll on the question in USA Today.

One argument put forward in favour of Cleveland hosting the museum was that it was a Cleveland DJ, Alan Freed, who coined the term “rock and roll”. Another was that Freed’s 1952 Moondog Coronation Ball, considered the first rock and roll concert, was held in Cleveland.

Will the 2024 ceremony be broadcast on TV or a livestream?

According to widespread reports, the 2024 RRHOF induction ceremony will stream live on Disney+, as the 2023 ceremony did. The broadcast will be available to watch on the streaming platform Hulu the following day and appear on the TV channel ABC later in October.

These reports were initially confirmed by the announcement on the Hall of Fame’s website that has since been deleted. But they are almost certainly true.

Who’ll be performing at the ceremony?

The live performances for the 2024 ceremony haven’t been announced yet.

It is customary for at least some of the inductees to perform, and speculation is rife that Ozzy Osbourne will be one of the performers. This is especially likely given the ‘Crazy Train’ singer’s support for the foundation and his positive reaction to being inducted.

Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks was announced yesterday as one of the stars appearing at the ceremony in some capacity, probably as a presenter. However, the announcement featuring her and other names has also been taken down from the Hall of Fame’s website.

We can expect more news about live performers and presenters to filter through in the coming weeks.
